Laura Karban, Associate Director

Laura joined M·E·L Research in 2026, bringing over 12 years of research experience and a strong track record of leading projects across arts and culture, heritage, housing, environment and climate, and the third sector. A mixed-methods researcher, she especially enjoys creative, accessible, and participatory methods.

Her work across both agency side and ‘client side’ (for Shelter) has given her a breadth of experience across methodologies and sectors, while also a deep understanding of research and embedding needs from the perspective of organisations commissioning research.

Laura likes building proper partnerships with clients and communities, as well as the process of turning raw data into meaningful and useful insight that supports great organisations to meet their goals.

When not at work, Laura can be found crafting (often badly), playing the fiddle (consistently badly) and spending time with her kids and her cats (as well as anyone might expect).

Qualitative research is all about gathering rich, detailed understanding and insight, that is often difficult to do through surveys and questionnaires. It allows us to research more complex issues and understand why people think and behave in the way they do.
