Active travel (making journeys by physically active means, like walking or cycling) is something M·E·L Research strongly supports and we have extensive experience in undertaking active travel market research. As well as offering health benefits to individuals, active travel can also deliver environmental benefits via enhanced air quality and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
We can offer a range of approaches on this topic depending on the audience to be engaged, with our experience including:
• Undertaking the either the end to end research process or just the analysis of consultation responses in relation to Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs). This activity typically involves the interpretation of both survey responses and of large volumes of qualitative feedback including letters and emails. Our analysis provides evidence of overall support/opposition, plus suggestions for scheme improvements.
• Large scale consultations on policy changes such as the introduction of Clean Air Zones in city centres.
• Monitoring and evaluating the impact of new infrastructure designed to enable active travel such as cycle lanes and footpaths.
• Exploring attitudes to active travel and sustainable transport choices to inform infrastrucutre design or campaign development. In particular, we have experience of identifying potential barriers and enablers to active travel as part of wider health and wellbeing studies via innovative techniques such as longitudinal communities.
• Engaging behavioural science techniques such as COM-B, MINDSPACE, EAST and others to provide actionable recommendations to encourage active travel.

M·E·L Research has the in-house resources to deliver the full range of solutions across a range of active travel market research projects, as well as the expertise to engage more vulnerable or hard-to-reach audiences and ensure seldom heard voices, who can often be disproportionately impacted by transport policy, are heard.
