We have undertaken a range of social research projects focussing on encouraging increased physical activity including for local authorities, the wider public sector and a range of third sector bodies.
We across the country to help clients explore and understand public interactions with services and to design interventions and campaigns to encourage physcial activity. We utilise a range of mixed methods, such as quantitative and qualitative approaches in our research design. From doorstep surveys, on-street surveys or surveys delivered in parks and other sporting facilities, to in depth interviews and remote qualitative engagement.
We draw on segmentation software to help us identify communities and inform our approach using tools such as Acorn (A Classification of Residential Neighbourhoods) which is firmly linked to physical activity behaviours.
In addition, we regularly utilise a range of beahviour change models, including COM-B, MINDSPACE and EAST for instance, to help build and contextualise insights around existing frameworks.

Our work has included gathering insight to understand barriers to activity and eating well in Wales; a mixed-methods appproach with residents of Slough – supported by the COM-B behaviour change model – to investigate residents’ capabilities, opportunity and motivation to be more active; as well as analysis of already existing data sets to understand views on active travel, the result of which was award winning.
“We are using the research to feed evidence into the next stage of the project which is around co-design and how we do transformation. So we’re keen to show that this is part of an ongoing process where we actually use the evidence and put it to work in transforming services. Too much local government engagement is about demonstrating to stakeholders you’ve done some engagement (no matter how bad that is) rather than demonstrating you’ve learned anything from it.”
