Liverpool City Region is currently undertaking the development of a new Local Transport Plan (LTP) which will work to facilitate an inclusive economy, building on the work already done via A Transport Plan for Growth. Part of the new LTP will be the development of a revised Park and Ride Strategy, and this study will inform that element.
In short, the LCR wanted to understand what impact rail park and ride schemes might have across a range of stations – whether they reduce longer car trips, in particular to Liverpool City Centre – or whether they simply reduce use of more sustainable/active travel modes to the nearest station.
The key things to understand from this project were:
· Understand origin/destination travel patterns for each station
· Modes used to travel to the station
· Reasons for using the station and how users would travel if the station was unavailable
In March 2022, MEL Research conducted a 5-minute, face to face survey with passengers at eight stations across the region.
The data was collected by trained social research interviewers, using a Computer Aided Personal Interview (CAPI) approach. All staff attended a briefing prior to the fieldwork starting. Car park counts were also conducted to measure their usage during the surveying periods.
We provided Liverpool City Region with a full overall report, as well as origin and destination maps and individual station reports utilising our CACI license to deliver GIS mapping.
