Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is part of the West Midlands Combined Authority and works with bus and train operators to make sure that public transport is safe, reliable and affordable. TfWM is also responsible for monitoring and improving road safety in the West Midlands.
The UK has been hit hard by Covid-19 and is now being hit hard by the current cost of living crisis. At the same time, the Local Transport Plan for the West Midlands demonstrates significant ambitions for the region to have more sustainable and affordable transport options for the local population, to meet the 2041 net zero target.
TfWM commissioned M·E·L Research in February 2023 to undertake the study, gathering responses from over 1,000 residents across the West Midlands Combine Authority area, to understand how the cost of living is impacting on people in their travel choices and their awareness of and appetite for alternatives to car usage. Results were representative by local authority area, age, gender and car ownership.
