Beddington Gateways: TfL Major Scheme

Background

Beddington sits within the London Borough of Sutton but is bordered by the London Boroughs of Croydon and Merton and bounded by the A232 and A236. It is made up of widely differing land uses, including the Strategic Industrial Location or SIL (home to approximately 300 businesses), residential areas with approximately 1,500 households, Metropolitan Open Land (MOL), landfill and sewage treatment operations, as well as Beddington Park.   

The London Borough of Sutton was successful in securing funding from Transport for London (TfL) to undertake a Major Scheme in the Beddington North area to improve key ‘gateways’ to the Beddington area and make significant improvements to the walking, cycling and public transport environment.

Methodology

The borough commissioned M·E·L Research to conduct on street surveys with users visiting key locations to:  

• Measure road users’ satisfaction with the street on that day; 
• Understand the factors that influence people’s decision to use a particular mode of transport when travelling throughout the area on that particular day.

The interviewers worked at each site over a period of three days carrying out on-street surveys with visitors or passers-by and completed 356 interviews.  

Outcomes

We provided the Borough with a report and datafiles.
