M·E·L Research Ltd to Lead Creative Scotland’s 2023 Applicant Survey
Creative Scotland serves as Scotland’s foremost organisation for the arts, screen and creative industries. Established with the vision of fostering a society in which the arts, screen and creative industries are highly valued, Creative Scotland has, since 2012/13, been implementing an opinion survey of its applicants. The objective is to continually improve the services offered by the organisation.
Following a competitive tender process, we are delighted to announce that M·E·L Research Ltd has been awarded the contract to undertake this survey for the 2023/24 period, with the option for extension to 2024/25.
Speaking about the partnership, Elliot Simmonds, who leads our culture sector work, said:
“As a company deeply committed to social value, M·E·L Research Ltd is thrilled to collaborate with Creative Scotland, an organisation whose ideals resonate strongly with our own. We share an intrinsic belief in the transformative power of the arts and creativity and this project gives us an excellent opportunity to dive into the arts in Scotland, engage with a diverse set of stakeholders and build on our experience of understanding the grant-making process already demonstrated via our work for the likes of Creative City Grants in Birmingham and Biffa Awards across the UK. It’s also fantastic to continue our work with clients in Scotland, one of the world’s great centres for arts, heritage and creativity. Creative Scotland’s dedication to on-going improvement in its process is to be applauded, and we’re very much looking forward to supporting them as they move in to a new reporting landscape with recently revised KPIs.”
M·E·L Research Ltd will be executing a comprehensive telephone survey involving applicants to Creative Scotland’s funding programmes. This survey aims to gauge:
• Perceptions of Creative Scotland and its corporate reputation • Opinions concerning the communication channels utilised by Creative Scotland • Feedback on the application process and suggestions for its improvement
The survey comprises a series of tracking questions to support year on year measurement, while also providing room for the inclusion of bespoke questions pertinent to specific campaigns or initiatives. This adaptable design ensures the survey remains both rigorous and relevant. The sample will include a balanced representation of both successful and unsuccessful applicants and include both individual and organisation-based applicants.

It was an absolute honour to attend the Women’s Health Conference in London this week, bringing together clinicians, policymakers, campaigners and others passionate about improving women’s health.
As a researcher specialising in women’s health social research, I was excited to have the opportunity to learn, be challenged and exchange ideas with people who share that passion. And I wasn’t disappointed.
There has (quite rightly) been a lot of discussion recently about the gender health gap. But some of the evidence shared…
We are pleased to be working with the MS Society on new health and care social research exploring how health and care services can better support people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and help reduce avoidable hospital admissions.
The health and care social research study will focus on opportunities for earlier intervention and more coordinated, preventative support, while recognising that hospital admission is sometimes clinically necessary. It will…
Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at Collections Inside & Out, a symposium hosted at National Trust Chirk Castle & Garden, bringing together people working across gardens, horticulture, heritage, collections and interpretation.
I was, perhaps, a slight interloper among so many people with deep horticultural expertise but every presentation was incredibly interesting and I learned a lot – and broadly managed to follow the general flow of what was being said (still not 100% au fait with taxa…
We’re pleased to share that our Commercial Director, Elliot Simmonds, will be speaking at the Collections Inside & Out symposium at National Trust Chirk Castle & Garden on 24 September 2026. Bringing together professionals working across heritage collections, gardens and landscapes, the symposium will explore the relationship between indoor and outdoor heritage and the opportunities created by thinking about them as part of a connected visitor experience.

New UK-wide research from M·E·L Research’s SPARK report shows improving mental health indicators alongside continuing exposure to suicide, widespread lifetime suicidal thoughts and significant gaps in practical knowledge.
Suicide prevention depends on understanding not only how many people are affected, but also how confident the public feel about recognising risk, starting difficult conversations and finding appropriate support. The Spring 2026 SPARK report from M·E·L Research brings these issues together, providing a detailed picture of attitudes…
