Environmental issues have never been far off the headlines since M·E·L Research started life over 30 years ago, as a niche environmental consultancy practice. Nowadays, our work centres more specifically on the topics of local environmental quality, sustainability, and energy consumption behaviour change.

Sustainable living, and the regulation of local environmental quality involves many professional disciplines. On the front line, the Environmental Health practitioner is one of the major professions whose competences cover effective regulation in environmental nuisances, food and trading standards. We work to evaluate user satisfaction with these services.

We assess the effectiveness of ‘clean neighbourhood’ programmes, and in 2015 ran a major national review for Defra on littering from vehicles. Our evaluation skills have been retained by Welsh Government in reviewing their Sustainable Development Charter, and assessing the Support for Sustainable Living grant regime.

Reducing domestic energy consumption has become a major national policy challenge, and Smart Meters are being rolled out nationwide to help households develop low energy behaviours. Our path-breaking work for DECC in evaluating the national community-based energy behaviour pilots, has led to further commissions including assessing the performance of the British Gas Energy Trust's Healthy Homes programme.
