Vico Homes: Employee Survey
Background & Context
Vico Homes (formerly WHD) commissioned M·E·L Research to deliver a staff engagement survey following its organisational rebrand. The survey formed part of a wider programme to understand colleague perceptions during a period of change, including views on organisational identity, communication, leadership, and workplace experience.
The key objective was to capture organisation-wide feedback to inform future internal strategy and support the transition to Vico Homes. A particular challenge was ensuring strong engagement across the workforce and capturing honest feedback during a period of change, where views may be more sensitive.
Approach
A quantitative staff survey was designed and delivered to all colleagues across the organisation. Invitations were issued via email, with an open survey link also made available to maximise participation and ensure accessibility for all staff. The survey included both closed questions (to provide robust quantitative measures) and open ended questions to capture more detailed feedback. All survey responses were subject to data quality checks. Open responses were reviewed and cleaned before being coded into themes to support analysis.
Analysis combined quantitative reporting with thematic analysis of open-text responses. Survey results were analysed at an overall organisational level, as well as by directorate to identify variation in experiences across the business.
Outputs
Deliverables included: A summary PowerPoint report presenting headline findings, key themes, and actionable insights, a series of directorate level reports providing more granular insight.
M·E·L Research presented the findings to core stakeholders, helping to contextualise results and support interpretation.

Collections inside and out: thinking differently about gardens, heritage and the visitor experience
September 2026
Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at Collections Inside & Out, a symposium hosted at National Trust Chirk Castle & Garden, bringing together people working across gardens, horticulture, heritage, collections and interpretation.
I was, perhaps, a slight interloper among so many people with deep horticultural expertise but every presentation was incredibly interesting and I learned a lot – and broadly managed to follow the general flow of what was being said (still not 100% au fait with taxa…

Progress, persistence and the gaps in suicide prevention knowledge
August 2026
New UK-wide research from M·E·L Research’s SPARK report shows improving mental health indicators alongside continuing exposure to suicide, widespread lifetime suicidal thoughts and significant gaps in practical knowledge.
Suicide prevention depends on understanding not only how many people are affected, but also how confident the public feel about recognising risk, starting difficult conversations and finding appropriate support. The Spring 2026 SPARK report from M·E·L Research brings these issues together, providing a detailed picture of attitudes…

Preventing suicide before the fire starts
September 2026
Across Europe, we have seen devastating wildfires destroy homes, habitats and communities. They offer us a powerful analogy for how we think about suicide prevention.
When a fire is raging, everything must be done to put it out. Firefighters, emergency services and communities mobilise to save lives. But even when the fire is eventually extinguished, enormous damage may already have been done, and recovery can take years. That is why fire services don’t only fight fires. They also invest in prevention: identifying risks, educating people, installing smoke alarms, creating fire breaks and trying to stop…
