Stockport Council: Employee Survey
Stockport Council wanted to understand employees’ experiences of working within the organisation and to assess progress against key organisational priorities, including leadership, communication, wellbeing, organisational culture, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and employee engagement.
The study sought to identify strengths and areas for improvement across different directorates and employee groups, while also tracking changes over time against previous staff surveys. Particular areas of interest included perceptions of senior leadership, workplace wellbeing, communication, learning and development, EDI and employees’ understanding of how their roles contribute to the Council’s wider mission and priorities.
M·E·L Research designed and delivered an employee survey across Stockport Council. The survey gathered feedback from employees working across all council directorates, including Adult Social Care, Children’s Services, Corporate and Support Services, Public Health and Services to Place. Analysis was conducted both at an organisational level and by directorate.
The questionnaire explored a wide range of topics including:
- Organisational vision, values and culture
- Leadership and communication
- Team working and line management
- Workplace wellbeing
- Equality, diversity and inclusion
Learning and developmentand many more. The survey also included open-ended questions, allowing employees to provide detailed feedback on positive changes they had seen within the organisation and areas where further improvements were needed.
M·E·L Research undertook detailed quantitative analysis of survey findings, including comparisons with previous employee surveys and benchmarking against other local authorities and national datasets where appropriate. Results were analysed by directorate and employee subgroup to identify areas of strength, emerging challenges and priority actions.
Findings were presented in a detailed PowerPoint report combining trend analysis, benchmarking, directorate-level results, thematic analysis and actionable recommendations. The findings were used by senior leaders to inform workforce planning, employee engagement initiatives, organisational development activity and future action planning across the council.
