Staffordshire Cybercrime Survey

Background

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire (OPCC) and Staffordshire Police launched the ‘Cyber Safe Staffordshire’ campaign in 2016 to raise awareness of cybercrime and how people can protect themselves and their families online. It is a joint campaign by Staffordshire Police and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Staffordshire.

To obtain a clear picture of awareness levels, cybercrime experiences and also internet usage behaviour of its local residents, the OPCC commissioned M·E·L Research to carry out Staffordshire’s first cybercrime survey.

Methodology

1,102 face-to-face interviews were undertaken with Staffordshire residents aged 16 or over during October 2016. The sample was representative of the County’s population by age and gender.

Outcomes

Around 80% of respondents indicated that they go online everyday or nearly everyday.  Of these 20% had not taken any measures to protect themselves whilst online. Six percent of respondents had been a victim of at least one cybercrime. The majority of these crimes were not reported to the police or Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting centre.
