National Fire Chiefs Council Leadership Project Research

The National Fire Chiefs Council’s People Strategy has six key areas for improvements of which Leadership is key to all. A Leadership Project has been established by the NFCC to form a response to the challenges facing current and future leaders in the Fire Sector. Being adaptable to the evolving requirements of a modern fire and rescue service is the key leadership and management focus for the sector.

Methodology

M·E·L Research worked with the Leadership Project team to explore demand, buy in and perceived challenges in four key workstreams within the Leadership Programme (Coaching and Mentoring, Talent Management Direct Entry, and Supervisory Leadership).

HR and Organisational Development leads across 44 Fire and Rescue Services, (94% of the Services invited to take part), were engaged via a highly bespoke online survey, using the Confirmit platform which looked at the specific benefits and challenges of each workstream.

Outcome

Results were reported back to the project board per workstream, with key themes combined into an executive summary. The survey was positioned so that verbatim responses were attributable to Fire and Rescue Services (although not individuals) to help identify services which might have particular concerns and/or those already applying best practice that the leadership team can learn from.

Following presentation of these survey findings, those who expressed a willingness to be re-contacted about the Leadership Programme were invited to follow up workshops, so that the products per workstream are developed on a co-production basis.
