Large-scale Research with Ethnic Minority Audiences – Co-Power (Consortium on Practices of Well-being and Resilience in Ethnic Minority Families and Communities)

We recently delivered a study for the University of Leeds to interview 1,000 members of ethnic minority communities across the UK to understand their response to and experience of COVID-19, with questions largely focussing on mental health and wellbeing, employment, their views on authority figures and their relationship with ethnic minority groups (e.g. police, NHS, politicians, etc) as well as the impact of digital and traditional media, crafting/hobbies and arts and culture on wellbeing and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of this on mood, trust in media (as compared to other institutions such as Government, Police Services) etc.

This is part of the Co-Power (Consortium on Practices of Well-being and Resilience in Ethnic Minority Families and Communities) project led by Professor Iyiola Solanke and 8 other academics from ethnic minority backgrounds. https://co-power.leeds.ac.uk/.

We undertook a face-to-face door-knocking approach, utilising ACORN mapping to target populations across 7 different cities which had the highest levels of Ethnic Minority populations by super output area. Due to the sensitive nature of the research interviewers passed the CAPI tablets to respondents for self-completion. Participants were provided with a £5 incentive for taking part.

The research has been published in numerous tranches across a range of policy updates and via webinars etc – for example: https://co-power.leeds.ac.uk/news/policy-brief-multi-lang/
