We delivered a nationally representative survey exploring public attitudes towards the governance and regulation of AI, commissioned by the Ada Lovelace Institute. This research was designed to provide timely evidence to inform Ada Lovelace Institute’s response to the UK Government’s proposed AI Bill, ensuring that public perspectives were represented alongside industry voices.
The project built on previous Ada Lovelace Institute/The Alan Turing Institute research, which highlighted strong public appetite for AI regulation, and sought to understand in more depth which regulatory features the public sees as most important (including AI safety, regulatory enforcement, transparency and accountabiity), and the role of industry in shaping the policy agenda.
The Approach
We designed and carried out a 10-15 minute online survey with 2,000 UK adults aged 18+, weighted to be nationally representative by age, gender, region, education, income and ethnicity. The questionnaire was structured to provide robust quantitative evidence within a short fieldwork window, enabling timely delivery of findings ahead of parliamentary milestones.
Outputs
The final outputs consisted of a set of detailed data tables and a short technical report, providing clear evidence of public support for stronger regulation of AI and trust in different actors. These insights equipped Ada with credible, timely evidence to strengthen their consultation response and advocate for public values to be reflected in the Bill.
