BME Prostate Cancer Pilot Evaluation

Background

In 2016 M·E·L Research was commissioned by NHS Nottingham City CCG to carry out an evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of an innovative 18 month Community Clinic Prostate Cancer Pilot. The Pilot was aimed at increasing awareness, improving prevention, and increasing early detection of Prostate Cancer amongst Black men in the City aged 45+.

Prostate Cancer UK data (from the time the evaluation was taking place) highlights that 1 in 4 Black men will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at some point in their lives, compared with 1 in 8 of all men. Prostate Cancer is the second most common cancer in Nottingham. In addition, Nottingham is one of the most diverse local authorities in England, with 7.3% of its population being Black (compared to 3.5% for England).

The Pilot comprised two key elements: a drop-in Community Clinic delivered by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in two Black and Minority Ethnic community centres, and a promotional campaign delivered by BME Cancer Communities to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer risks and PSA testing.

Methodology

Our evaluation was mixed-method comprising the following elements:

  • Familiarisation and rapid evidence review to build on learning
  • Pre and post-campaign awareness surveys
  • Qualitative interviews with stakeholders
  • Qualitative interviews with service users
  • Production of case studies
  • Secondary analysis of risk assessment data collected by the clinic.

Outcomes

Our evaluation report synthesised the key findings for NHS Nottingham City CCG, highlighting the positive outcomes of the Pilot and outlining issues for further consideration.

M·E·L Research were very professional and easy to work with. Their expert knowledge ensured they delivered an evaluation which has informed our work locally.
