M·E·L Research presented at the Public Health England (PHE) Cancer Services, Data and Outcomes Conference 2018

In June 2018, we co-presented a poster with NHS Greater Nottingham Clinical Commissioning Partnership (formerly NHS Nottingham City CCG) at the PHE Cancer Services, Data and Outcomes Conference at the University of Manchester. The poster showcases our evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of an innovative 18 month pilot using community-based clinics to increase awareness and detection of Prostate Cancer amongst Black men in Nottingham.  The poster was presented within the ‘reducing cancer inequalities’ conference theme.

The pilot itself had two elements: a) a drop-in community-based clinic delivered by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust; and b) a promotional campaign delivered by the Third Sector organisation BME Cancer Communities to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer risks and PSA testing.

The poster shares the key findings from the mixed-methods evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of both elements of the pilot, along with our key conclusions about positive outcomes and issues requiring further consideration. One key implication of the evaluation is that NHS Greater Nottingham Clinical Commissioning Partnership went on to work with primary care and Prostate Cancer UK to develop local guidelines for GPs to effectively risk-manage their patients.

The conference was hosted by Public Health England and brought together approximately 400 delegates from PHE, the NHS, patient representatives, cancer charities, and the academic sector. Whilst most posters focused on clinical studies, ours was one of a smaller number which highlighted the use of a community-based intervention to reduce cancer inequalities.
