BRIDGES Evaluation

Starting in January 2021, we will be conducting an evaluation for Steps To Work (STW) of their BRIDGES project, that aims to assist people in The Black Country into employment.


BRIDGES is one of four projects funded by the European Social Fund and National Lottery Community Fund, being delivered as part of Building Better Opportunities, to assist residents of England who are particularly disadvantaged, and STW are the lead organisation.

Following a successful bid to the Big Lottery Fund, STW were awarded a contract to deliver their Employment Support Over 24’s programme to those with multiple needs and complex barriers to employment living in Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton. The programme aims to develop their skills and confidence, and will bring together 15 delivery partners to offer an individualised and broad approach to supporting these people into finding employment.

BRIDGES offers support with CVs and job applications, one-to-one mentoring, confidence and motivation workshops, volunteering opportunities, and other services and activities that help to build confidence in approaching employment opportunities.

To conduct the evaluation of BRIDGES, we will use a mixed methods approach combining both qualitative investigation and quantitative data to gather further insight into the elements of the project that had the most impact on success. We will be gathering data from those who have met the criteria in order to benefit from the programme; they are over 25 years of age, unemployed, economically inactive, are a UK resident, have numerous barriers that hinder their access to employment, and require  support to independently engage in existing services.

The research will combine our behavioural insights expertise with a Social Return on Investment evaluation in order to assess the programme’s progress and impact in meeting the project objectives, alongside measuring its overall effectiveness. This  will take place from January 2021 and a final report will be presented to stakeholders in July 2022, with an interim report in October 2021.
